Mobile Payments Startup Boku Launches Billing Partnership With Sprint 0

boku_logoFresh off a $35 million round of funding, mobile payments company Boku is announcing a direct carrier agreement with Sprint that will allow Sprint customers to charge online purchases to their Sprint wireless bill through a two-step authorization process. The agreement was made possible via a partnership with mobile payments operator BillToMobile. As you may remember, Boku offers an online payments platform that allowed users to pay for online goods by charging the transaction to their mobile phone bill. When a user wants to purchase a virtual item, he can enter his cell phone number on a site, the site sends a text message to the phone, the user confirms the transaction with a short reply, and all the charges show up on his phone bill.

A Mid-Career Switch: From Massachusetts State Trooper to iOS Developer-To-The-Rescue 0

before-after-2After writing about Lovestagram, the app that Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger’s girlfriend made for him as a Valentine’s Day present, we didn’t think we could find a cuter story. But we totally did. Smoopa, a mobile commerce app I wrote about yesterday, is also the by-product of a little love story. Derek Langton, who served as a Massachusetts state trooper for 18 years, picked up programming over the last year and a half to change his career and prove his ex-Googler husband and Smoopa’s co-founder, Mendel Chuang wrong. “When you have an economy like the one we have now and when you’re trying to change career paths, it’s not easy,” Langton said. “But it comes down to motivation. It’s?like losing weight. People try and fail. But when you see that it’s a lifestyle change and you make it part of who you are, you can be successful.”

College professors and students are in an arms race over cheating. Students find new sources for pre-written term papers; professors find new ways to check the texts they get for plagiarized material. But why are all these young people cheating? A new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, suggests one reason: income inequality, which decreases the general trust people have toward each other.

Lukas Neville, a doctoral student at Queen’s University in Ontario, was inspired to do the study by his own teaching experience. “I ran into the question of academic dishonesty firsthand,” he says. Like other instructors at universities across North America, he considered using services that automatically check students’ papers for plagiarized material. “But it got me thinking about the actual underlying mechanism that promotes or inhibits academic dishonesty.” He thought the answer might be trust; if students don’t trust each other, some of them might think they have to cheat to keep up with their unscrupulous classmates. And other research has shown that this kind of distrust is more likely to be found in places with high income inequality.

To look at the connection between trust, income inequality, and academic dishonesty, Neville took advantage of data from Google that breaks down search terms by state. Neville found data on searches on phrases like “free term paper,” “buy term paper,” and the names of cheating websites. He compared these to survey data on how trusting people are in each state and a measure of income inequality from the U.S. Census Bureau. He controlled for several other factors that could influence the number of searches, including how many students are in each state, how large the colleges in each state are, and average household income.

Indeed, the data showed that people who live in states with more income inequality were less trusting in general, and those states had more evidence of academic dishonesty. The next step, Neville says, will be to duplicate this finding using laboratory experiments, using pay structure to alter income inequality, then observing the effects on students’ trust and dishonest behavior.

If one of the root causes of cheating is distrust, this could explain why measures like honor codes work, Neville says: when students trust that other people aren’t cheating, they are less likely to cheat themselves. “As educators, there’s not much you can do about the level of inequality in society, but we do have the ability to help foster trust in our colleges and classrooms,” he says.

Spa Week Shapes The Nation Through Health & Wellness … 0

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 27, 2012

By definition, spas are places devoted to overall well-being through various professional services that renew mind, body and spirit, according to the International Spa Association. For years, the spa industry has been undergoing an exciting transformation of making these services more diverse and wellness-focused than ever before, offering more programs and incentives for consumers to lead healthier, happier lives. Spa Week, the original and most successful Spa Marketing Event to date, continues to successfully spread this message by making it possible for millions to take advantage of the healing benefits of the spa with its biannual, signature $ 50 treatments.

Moving into its 16th installation this Spring, Spa Week will deliver the most innovative, cutting-edge services at a discount to deserving consumers across the United States and Canada. From April 16th 22nd, hundreds of spas (day, medical and resort), yoga and Pilates studios, fitness centers and other health and wellness practices will offer up to three signature treatments at the major discount of just $ 50 each. As always, Spa Week partners with some of the most prominent, respected names in the industry to deliver the most current trends in spa and wellness services. From introducing new massage therapies like Acupressure and Bamboo Massage and advanced, clinically proven, skin-perfecting facials to weight-loss and nutrition classes, Spa Week is responsible for educating spa-goers on how to incorporate specific treatments into their lifelong health regiments.

Prior to Spa Weeks inception in 2004, the spa industry was notoriously mistaken as a VIP circle reserved for beautifying and pampering the rich and famous. In the years to follow, Spa Week broke down these barriers by opening up the world of spa to the masses by making costly treatments affordable for the average consumer. After experiencing a huge economic downturn and the recent health care crisis, stressed-out, overworked consumers have come to rely on Spa Week as a means to provide the physical and mental, therapeutic relief they need on a budget. For the past eight years, Spa Week has established itself as the most comprehensive way to engage consumers in the health and wellness lifestyle, and thanks to its Spring and Fall Events, no longer is the spa associated as a fluffy place of privilege, but an essential life ingredient thats within reach of the masses.

In order to take advantage of Spa Week, consumers should register on SpaWeek.com for exclusive information on participating spas and their $ 50 services. Now for the first time ever, SpaWeek.com will launch five weeks early, on March 12th, to give consumers even more time to book their desired services well in advance. It is recommended that spa-goers sign up and book their appointments as early as possible.

Never before has the spa industry been more focused on delivering serious wellness initiatives by offering more services and programs geared toward building long-term consumer relationships that go beyond the periodic spa visit. This is the result of more savvy, educated spa-goers that Spa Week helped to create not only with its Spring and Fall Events, but also with its National Gift Card Program which recently launched in over 17,000 retail locations including Target, Sams Club, CVS Pharmacy and Rite Aid. As the health and wellness needs of consumers change, Spa Week is there and will continue to be an integral way in which they experience the spa.

Spa Week was created and founded by Cheryl Reid, who hails from successful careers within the luxury spa industry and publishing spheres. Joining Spa Week for the Spring 2012 Event, sponsors include: Exclusive National Media Sponsor: Allure magazine; Exclusive Spa Association Partner: ISPA; Exclusive Skincare Sponsor: American Laser Skincare; Exclusive Wine Sponsor: Rioja; and introducing Exclusive Book Sponsor: Where We Belong by Emily Giffin and Exclusive Cosmetic Sponsor: Christopher Drummond Beauty. Co-sponsors include CEW and Spa Chicks On The Go

Dolomite Mountains: Wine, Spirits And Coffee In The Dolomites 0

Whether you’re returning from a long hike, finishing up a day of biking the trails or just relaxing after a day of taking in the breathtaking sights of the Dolomite mountains, there’s no doubt you’ve worked up a thirst.

Thirsty travelers visiting this region are not to be disappointed. The area is not only home to a delectable array of fine dining and ethnic foods but also boasts a wide selection of beverage choices such as wine, spirits and coffee concoctions.

Given the fact that the Dolomites are primarily located in Italy, it’s no surprise that the wines of this region are rich, plentiful and sure to please even the most discriminating wine connoisseur. Many of the valleys and hills of the Dolomites are home to their own vineyards and wineries, with the sunlight and seasons offering favorable conditions for growth. There are three grapes native to the Dolomites: the white nosiola and the red teroldego rotoliano and the marzemino.

Red wine drinkers visiting the Dolomites can enjoy the rich, full bodied flavors of the local merlots, cabernet sauvignons and cabernet francs. The slopes around Bolzano and Trentino produce the native blends of teroldego, shiava and blauburgunder. Those who prefer the white variety will find pinot bianco, pinot grigio and chardonnay. Traminer, another white blend that hails from Austria, is described as deliciously floral and extremely light bodied.

The village of Trentino has earned its own place on the map as Italy’s largest producer of chardonnay. It’s also known for producing sparkling wines by way of the traditional method and boasts a sweet wine called vino santo, which is made from dried grapes and is considered somewhat more rare than the other wines of the area. And for those hot summer days, visitors are encouraged to enjoy a holundersaft; a refreshing juice made from ripe elderberries.

2012-03-29-Grappa.jpg

Aside from wine, the Dolomites is also home to a distilled spirit called grappa, which is unique to Italy. Grappa is made from the solid remains of grapes that are left over from winemaking, primarily comprised of the skins but also including the stems, seeds and yeast residue. The grappa is aged for six months in wooden casks, stored another six months in air-tight glass carboys and then refined and bottled for consumption.

The flavor of grappa depends on the variety of grape used, but it is generally described as dry and is quite potent. In fact, Italians refer to grappa as “firewater” because it is a particularly strong drink, usually between 80 and 90 proof. It’s highly aromatic, warm, smooth and distinctly fruity — and is typically enjoyed after a meal. Some people add grappa to espresso to create a “caf? corretto,” another popular after dinner treat.

For visitors who prefer coffee over wine and spirits, the Dolomites offers delicious concoctions that are sure to please. Primarily taken as short, black espresso shots — espresso solo or espresso doppio for a single or double shot, respectively — it is also available in a wide variety of espresso drinks. Some of the most popular include:

Cappuccino: very popular, traditionally made with equal parts espresso, steamed milk and frothed milk.
Caff? breva: cappuccino with half and half instead of whole milk.
Caff? latte: a single shot of espresso combined with steamed milk, with a 3:1 ratio of milk to coffee.
Caff? mocha: basically a caff? latte with chocolate powder or chocolate syrup
Cafe con leche: 1.5 ounces of espresso with eight ounces of steamed milk
Cafe macchiato: a shot of espresso topped off with a dollop of frothed milk. Translated literally, it means spotted coffee.
Americano: a single shot of espresso with six to eight ounces of hot water added. This is the closest thing to brewed coffee available, but because it’s not brewed in a full carafe, it results in a stronger brew than normal drip coffee.
Ristretto: a very strong, “restricted” shot. Only about one-half of the water is allowed to come through the coffee grounds, but the shot takes the same amount of time as a normal pull, ensuring the strength of the espresso.
Lungo: the opposite of a ristretto; an extra long pull allowing approximately twice as much water through the same amount of coffee as normally used for a single shot.
Caff? Romano: regular espresso with a twist of lemon or lemon peel.
Caff? corretto: Espresso “corrected” with a shot of grappa, brandy, cognac or other liqueur. It is ordered including the name of the desired liquor (for example “un caff? corretto a grappa”).

Given the rich culture of the Dolomites, and the delectable dishes of traditional foods served throughout the region, it’s no surprise that those traveling to this area can also expect to find a wide array of beverage choices. And as with most things in the Dolomites, the drinks served here are rooted in tradition and unique to the location, giving those who partake in them a little taste of the history and beauty that surrounds them.
